Rubber Boots Data was founded in 2021 by me, Frank van der Most. I have a double background, both in computer science and in science studies.
In science studies, I learned to study how science works: how it was organized, how it was funded, and how scientists conducted their research. In doing so, I collected data through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Such interviews will also be at the core of finding out what solutions you need for your data.
I started building database applications to support my research in science studies. In 2014, building a multi-user database for science became my full-time job as a research engineer at the Department of Economic History at Lund University.
In 2020, I took sabbatical leave and worked on the data of a sea turtle conservation project on the Osa peninsula in the far South West corner of Costa Rica. There, I experienced the difficulties of conducting fieldwork in remote locations. I also experienced how rewarding it is to apply my skills to the pressing concerns of nature conservation, biodiversity and sustainability. The founding of Rubber Boots Data is the result of this life course change.
I am an active member of the FileMaker developers community, where I co-organize the FileMaker for Research User Group. FileMaker is the database software of my choice : easy but not simple, effective and available for Windows, Mac and iOS.
